The summit celebrated the visit of two senior guests from the Schimmel Piano Factory in Braunschweig, Germany; Mr Lothar Kiesche (Director of Sales and Marketing) and Mr Nils Hasse (Head Technician). Dealers were treated to in-depth workshops, covering new Schimmel technical advances and model developments.

Mr Kiesche and Mr Hasse were invited by the Australian Piano Tuners and Technicians Association to be keynote speakers for their APTTA Conference, held in Melbourne from October 17^th to 20^th.

Their visit also included tours of exciting Schimmel Piano installations in institutes and colleges, as well as a VIP Reception for Schimmel owners and special guests.

All competitors will get to play on the magnificent new Schimmel K 219 Konzert grand piano, which will be brought in especially for South Street. The instrument was built in Braunschweig Germany and offers the pinnacle in piano engineering and performance. The piano has been supplied by Schimmel’s Melbourne dealer, Bernies Music Land.

The Pianoforte competition at Royal South Street attracts pianists Australia wide, and has launched many young performers’ careers. The event runs from August 7th to 9th in Ballarat.

Royal South Street Society acknowledges the generosity of Mr Andrew Cochrane AM and family, who have honoured the Society with sponsorship of this section in memory of their mother, Margaret Schofield, OAM.

This competition is open to any pianist 16 to 32 years who has been a resident in Australia for two years prior to the event. Competitors are required to present at least two significant works which may include an Etude, a Ballade, Sonata Movement, Scherzo, the Barcarolle, or a similar large work. Performance time required is a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes.

The evening held two celebrations; the Australian launch of this sensational new grand piano, as well as the launch of Kevin Suherman’s third Schimmel International Artist Series CD recording. This new CD features works by List and Chopin, as well as Hungarian Rhapsody by Listz, Kevin’s encore which left the audience in awe.

The Schimmel K219 features Schimmel’s new Piano Action concept; whereby a full concert-sized grand piano action is fitted into a medium sized grand. Slightly larger than the K213 grand, this new model offers enhanced mid and bass response and power, giving the performer even more scope for dynamic exploration.

Thanks to the guidance of Max Cooke, the program was complemented by two additional pianists, Victor Hu and Jayden Taviera with violinist Williard Chong.

Bob was thrilled and explained to audiences how there are limited opportunities to play together as pianists. He loved the Schimmel K280 grand and Steve loved the CF218 grand… so much so that we asked if they would like to swap instruments at interval and the answer was “no”! Bob and Steve performed an incredible mix of jazz standards and original tunes and were well praised by the generous audience.
