Kevin Suherman’s assured, intelligently-informed approach to the programme on this CD is a treat not only for the ears but also for the critical musical mind. Liszt’s Liebestraum no 3 is a crisp yet mellow interpretation, conveying without sentimentality both the liebe and the traum that the composer intended. In Gnomenreigen, Suherman seems to be having as much fun as the gnomes with his wonderfully playful playing that shows his understanding of ‘caprice’. In Coquette- replique (Carnaval) the treble (soprano) is separated distinctly from the lower question, and the teasing is impossible to miss. The legato, lyrical section indicates that Coquette might have given in to the owner of the male voice – but the ending suddenly turns to a minor key, so maybe it is not such a satisfactory outcome after all! That this little tale is told convincingly by the pianist is a tribute to his insight into the music.

The strong repeated note in bar one is an imperious summons to pay attention to Chopin’s Grande Polonaise Brillante, op 22. The rest is enthralling and the end comes disappointingly soon. Listening to the Andante spianato, the audience rides en barque on a gently heaving sea that never intimidates.

Ivana Tomášková and Tamara Smolyar could not have picked a better programme to demonstrate the art of complementary musicianship. From the initial muscular eruption of sound in Grieg’s Sonata no.3 in C minor for violin and piano, opus 45, the conversation between the two instruments is established and then maintained all the way through the impressive performance. The question-and-answer passages, evoking chatting cuckoos, are a model of clarity and scherzando playing, even if at times the mood of the piece is sombre. Smolyar’s easy interpretation of rippling Nordic brooks and Tomášková’s sparkling line bring to life the landscapes that influenced this work. In complete contrast to the unsettling opening bars, the quiet ending leaves the listener in a calm and reflective mood – a prodigious achievement on the part of the performers.

The technical excellence of the performers is evident in their scrupulous attention to note values, pauses, dynamics and mood – and the result is music that is as pleasing as it is technically correct. At all times in this programme is the intention of the composer respected, neither performer ever presuming to impose her influence on the work. True artistry. Many thanks to Bernard Capicchiano of Bernie’s Music Land (www.musicland.com.au) for producing this excellent CD.

The Schimmel Keyboard and Action Assembly, designed by Schimmel and produced in Germany, features painstakingly optimised leverage ratios and reliability.
Beyond limitations

Playing and performing on smaller grand pianos can be frustrating for high-level pianists. We all accept this as "just a fact of life". Smaller means less. Less projection, limited tonal colour and a smaller and less responsive action.

Schimmel shatters this perception in this our smallest grand piano - the Classic C169. The accepted limitations of the smaller grand are overcome with innovative design and our Schimmel Konzert concept.

The Schimmel C-169 offers you the expressive capability that every pianist and aspiring pianist needs to make music come alive. And that feels wonderful every time you play.

It’s satisfying to own a piano you can consistently rely on for high level music making.
