Team of Pianists presents an exciting programme at the Rippon Lea Ballroom on Tuesday 24th of May (2022) in celebration of the life of Max Cooke. Schimmel's Australian distributor Bernie's Music Land will provide 2 gorgeous grand pianos for this event.

This exciting programme is definitely "once in a lifetime". To hear four of Melbourne's most loved and accomplished pianists in the one programme is a treat. And in rarely performed duet formation and - 8 hands at 2 pianos! For anyone who loves piano music, and anyone who had a connection to Max Cooke, what a beautiful way to say "Thank You".

Programme:

Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave) arranged Hermann for 8 hands at 2 pianos
Beethoven - Piano Sonata in C# minor, Op. 27 No. 2, “Moonlight” (Kevin Suherman)
Rachmaninoff - Suite No. 2 for 2 pianos (Darryl Coote & Robert Chamberlain)
Bizet - Jeux d’Enfants (selection) piano four hands (Rohan Murray & Robert Chamberlain),
Smetana - Rondo for 8 hands at 2 pianos

As a bonus, this event will also be the official launch of a limited-edition CD featuring Max Cooke’s September 1983 recording of Brahms’ Waltzes Op. 39 and Fantasien Op. 116. Your copy of this new CD is included in the admission price for the concert.

Another special part of the evening will be the display and sale of the special FOTOPS Hammer Memorabilia - individually mounted and framed hammers from Max Cooke's final Bösendorfer grand piano, as used by so many of his talented protégés.

Part 1 “Frederic Chopin – biography in the sounds”
Roman Salyutov will explore the great Polish composer by presenting some significant works by him. By comparing different letters and historical circumstances, he will find out how Chopin told about his life in his compositions.

Part 2 “Franz Liszt – a life between extremes”
“The king of pianists” Franz Liszt is wondered mainly because of his extraordinary technical abilities. Such popular point of view reduces the importance of his person and does not reflect the different sides of his great talent. Roman Salyutov will present Franz Liszt’s music in all its variety – from well-known pieces up to works one would never think they are by Liszt.

Recognised as a leading educator, lecturer, adjudicator, author and pianist, Professor Max’s breadth and experience in the piano world is unmatched.

Professor Max Cooke has lead a fascinating life, from his upbringing firstly in Australia, then in Europe and especially Germany, leading to his teaching and concert work around the world.

Locally, Professor Cooke has held positions including; President of the Victorian Music Teachers Association, National President of the Australian Society for Music Education, and Chairman of the Commission on the Education of the Professional Musician within the International Society for Music Education (ISME). He is a Professor at Melbourne University Conservatorium, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Music, and he was a Professor also at Monash University. He taught for some time at the Victorian College of the Arts.

He has produced a great number of CD recordings and publications on music and piano teaching, most notably his books titled Tone, Touch and Technique.

In the field of performance, Max Cooke has played many times as soloist with orchestras, giving over sixty concerto presentations, and he has been regularly involved with chamber music and accompanying, playing both piano and harpsichord. He was very proud to perform the Concert No 2 in Bflat by Brahms with Sir Bernard Heinze conducting, and he performed the Concerto No 3 by Rachmaninof under John Bishop, who later moved to Adelaide.

In 1988 Max Cooke was invited to become a Fellow of the Australian College of Education. In the Queen’s birthday honours lists of 1998, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to music and to education, particularly to piano pedagogy and the training of students. In 2001, Max Cooke received the ‘Bundesverdienstkreuz’ from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Johannes Rau. This makes him an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic.

This intimate evening offers a rare opportunity to hear Professor Max talk about his history and musical life, as well as play some of his most loved piano works.
